How to Choose a Marching Bass Drumhead
The bass drum anchors the sound of any marching band. It’s important that you get the right bass drum tone to feel like your marching corps is making a big impact. When it comes to choosing a marching bass drumhead, you’ll want to start by picking the correct size. Common marching bass drum sizes are 18”, 20”, 22”, & 24”, though you may also have larger marching bass heads like 28, 30”, or 32”.
Once you know the correct size for your drum, it’s time to find your sound. EVANS makes three solid options for marching bass heads: the MS1, MX1, and MX2. EVANS MS1 marching head offer a traditional single ply of 10mil film without muffling, providing the widest range of damping options. The MS1 series is very durable and projects warm, musical tones both indoors and out.
The MX1 marching bass drumhead features built-in overtone control for increased low-end and comes in both black and white color options. The MX series contains a unique tone damping system that can be manipulated by applying the included felt arcs to enhance articulation and focus low end for both indoor and outdoor marching. The MX2 offers the same tone, tech, and color options, but in a two-ply version.
