CONCERT DRUMHEADS
How to Choose a Timpani Head
The timpani is a staple of any concert band’s sound, so it’s important to get the right tone to characterize your percussion section properly. When it comes to choosing a timpani head, you’ll want to start by picking the correct size. EVANS timpani heads come in a wide range of size options from 20” to 36” and everything in between, so you’ll need to be sure of the size of your timpani when choosing.
Once you know the correct size, it’s time to find your sound. EVANS makes two great options for timpani heads. Our Orchestral timpani drumhead retains definite pitch and perform magnificently at pianissimo with soft mallets, yet will not break up or sound harsh under the stress of triple forte. These drumheads are pre-tensioned for tuning consistency and have a power-coated steel insert ring that delivers desired effect and additional support.
EVANS Strata Timpani drumhead features a smooth, calf-colored coating designed to prevent timpani mallet wear and enhance the sound of the head. Strata's warm tone, pitch clarity, and articulation blends naturally with any ensemble. All Strata Timpani drumheads are pre-tensioned with a powder-coated insert ring for tuning consistency and additional hoop support.
