Rosin

Rosin is a sticky substance that is applied to the bow of an orchestral instrument. The consistency of the rosin helps create friction between the bow and the instrument’s strings, which allows for easier playing and a stronger sound.

How’s Rosin Made?

The process of making rosin is straightforward. First, tree resin is collected by cutting and tapping a tree. Then the resin is heated, sometimes in combination with other ingredients which may affect its color or material quality. The end-product, known as rosin, looks glassy in texture, is brittle, and can break somewhat easily.

Light & Dark Rosin

D’Addario Natural Rosin comes in Light and Dark options. Dark rosin has a lower melting point and feels stickier. The extra stickiness helps the bow grip the string, making it great for cello or viola. Light rosin has a higher melting point and is less sticky, making it good for people who might not need as much grip on their bow—like violin or viola players. D’Addario Natural Light and Dark Rosin is also available with Rosin Guard, a shock-absorbent guard which protects rosin from breaking when you drop it.

Clarity Hypoallergenic Innovations

D'Addario Clarity rosin is a next-gen synthetic rosin compound that goes on as clear as the sound it produces. Made from synthetic hydrocarbon resin, the Clarity formula contains hypoallergenic ingredients and delivers the same performance as pine rosins. Whether for violin, viola, or cello, Clarity is a great option for players with allergies.
