ABOUT Javier Valerio
Dr. Javier Valerio is widely recognized around the world as one of the pioneers and leading classical saxophonists in Latin America. After studying with the world renown saxophonist Eugene Rousseau at Indiana University School of Music, Valerio returned to his home country of Costa Rica and established the Saxophone Studio, teaching as a Distinguished Professor at The University of Costa Rica.
Valerio obtained his Master degree in Jazz Studies at Florida International University. He was also a professor in the Classical Saxophone Studio at FIU, the New World School of the Arts in Miami, and a member of the Florida Saxophone Quartet. Dr. Valerio obtained DMA degree from the University of Kansas, as part of the KU-UCR partnership initiated in 1958.
Javier has been invited to play as soloist with many Symphony Orchestras and Concert Bands around the world. He has also performed on numerous occasions at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, World Saxophone Congresses, and Latin American Saxophone Alliance Congresses.
He was a member of the widely recognized Adolphe Saxophone International Competition Jury in 2014 in Dinant Belgium and has also been invited as a jury member to many other saxophone international competitions. Valerio has also been very active in the popular music scene, performing with jazz bands, combos, and Latin ensembles through the years. He has travelled offering recitals, clinics, masterclasses, and concerts throughout the world.
