About Beto Martinez

Beto Martinez is a guitarist, songwriter, recording engineer, and producer. He is co-founder of the Grammy Award-winning, and two-time Grammy nominated, Grupo Fantasma, as well as critically acclaimed bands Brownout, Money Chicha, The Los Sundowns, and Caramelo Haze. Born and raised on the Texas/Mexico Border in Laredo, Martinez has been playing guitar for over 30 years.

Beto moved to Austin in 1996 and in 2000 formed Grupo Fantasma with longtime collaborators and fellow Laredoans Greg Gonzalez and Adrian Quesada (Black Pumas). Fantasma's success would lead him on a 20+ year adventure, from the early days of spartan van touring, to becoming a backing band for a true musical legend—Prince. Further collaborations and backing opportunities with the likes of Daniel Johnston, Larry Harlow, Joe Bataan, GZA, Sheila E, and Maceo Parker would follow. Along the way, they would earn two Grammy nominations, a Grammy win (2011), more than a decade of Austin Music Award wins, induction into the Austin Music Hall of Fame, and three appearances on the iconic Austin City Limits TV show.

Martinez has performed on stages around the world, including Bonnaroo, Montreal Jazz Fest, North Sea Jazz, Womad, Outside Lands, ACL Music Festival, Lowlands, and many others. He has appeared with his bands as well as a sideman with artists such as Karl Denson (Tiny Universe, Rolling Stones) and Golden Dawn Arkestra.

Beto owns and operates a boutique recording studio outside Austin called Lechehouse Music. There he works as a producer and recording engineer and has recorded and mixed music for the likes of Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Fastball, Black Pumas, John Medeski, many local artists, and his own projects. In 2021, he was nominated by the Austin Chronicle for Best Producer. His music has appeared in various movies, TV shows, and podcasts. He is also featured in the July 2022 issue of Guitar Player Magazine, which called him " The new king of Latin Rock guitar."
